Songs of Praise
In 1927 apparently a Christian man wrote to the BBC requesting that a Christian Programme ought to be broadcast on television. It was received by the BBC and was labeled ‘action later’.
The ‘action’ did not take place until 1961, when a producer decided that there ought to be a Christian programme on BBC television. So in October of that year ‘Songs of Praise’ was born with the first edition being broadcast from a Baptist Church in Cardiff. Over 3,300 editions of this programme have been produced and it is widely known as a broadcasting phenomena and the longest running television programme of any kind anywhere in the world.
It has undergone many ‘make overs’ in its long running history and has had many changes of broadcasting time slots, and with its multiple presenters changing over the years it still reaches millions of viewers within the U.K.
It has featured members of the Royal Family and ordinary people in very ordinary situations. Its message is quite simple in that it features hymns old and new and from a variety of differing church cultures.
So, one simple letter, from a Christian made a difference even though it took years to ‘action’.
You never know what one word, one deed or one gift of love might do!!!!
